Ice cream makers can be impractical. Like a crossword puzzle they can be an exhausting, expensive and a dangerous obsession. Just as it's easier in this economy to use your local library to improve your vocabulary, it's less trouble to just walk to your local dairy to sate such creamery cravings. But it's summertime and everyone in the family deserves a treat no matter what your in come when you come in from the heat. Father's Day is approaching, the kids are gonna be out of school, and mom shouldn't have to water down her wine to keep up with them. So how do I do it all? An ice cube tray, like this Tovolo Perfect Cube ice tray, $14.99 for two on Amazon dot com.
Here's a favorite all purpose trick of mine. Fill the tray's concubines with OJ, purple stuff, some soda or Sunny Delight. Freeze it with some old popsicle sticks or tongue depressors and - irony on a stick! - it wil soon make your tongue so happy! The kids can lolly on them until they're all juiced up, and dad and mom can turn the sticks upside down like spoons on a stick melting the ice to make a good for you screwdriver or sangria. Even though we weren't recessed growing up they remind me of the summer days of my youth and the taste of nostalgia is priceless.
Best of all? If you're feeling the heat in and out of the house next summer too, don't worry. Ice cube trays are the original ZipLoc bag and there's no better way to keep your liquid leftovers fresh!
