This was the scene at yesterday's Big Apple BBQ Block Party where thongs of people stood tall around green flags clearly in protest of Hossein Mousavi having the Iranian Presidential election stolen from him. A spontaneous show of solidarity from the New York community sharing the progressive party's call for reform was the last thing I expected to see between the lines for Martin's BBQ Joint and 17th Street Bar & Grill, but it just goes to show you Danny Meyer's followers are as informed about their meat as they are about their politics and for just a minute I felt just like Tereza in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, capturing Czech Slovakia on the brink of American liberation. With the succulence of Ed Mitchell's whole hog right around the corner I doubt anyone was feeling unbearably light for long, but it was still moving to see so many people remember why we barbecue on the 4th of July in the first place.
UPDATE: More here on how BBQers could have done more for the cause by serving kale, spinach and peas instead of cole slaw and beans. Is Andrew Sullivan the new Danny Meyer?
